Holland America Line Raises Over $1 Million for Susan G. Komen for the Cure

CureHolland American Line has raised over $1 million dollars for Susan G. Komen for the Cure through its ..On Deck for the Cure Program... This has earned the cruise line a place on Komens very prestigious Million Dollar Council. Since the inception of the program in 2006, On Deck for the Cure has raised approximately $1.1 million in breast cancer-related causes. What the program requires is for ship guests to make donations for the opportunity to walk laps around the deck of the cruise ship. Holland America Line had just recently extended their contract with Susan G. Komen for the Cure so that they could continue the On Deck for the Cure program for many years to come.

Richard D. Meadows, executive vice president of marketing, sales, and guest programs, said on the record, Were overwhelmed with the spirit and generosity of our guests. On every cruise, our guests take time from their holiday to raise money to help fight this disease. Holland America Line is proud to be a vehicle for this most worthy cause.

Meadows has made note that in 2007, one group on board the cruise ship ms Maasdam brought nearly 800 participants, which smashed any previous walk record held by Holland America Line. The previous record was 349 walkers. Furthermore, the 2008 Grand World Voyage that occurred on the ms Amsterdam raised over $50,000 through walks for cancer.

Katrina McGhee, the vice president of marketing for Susan G. Komen for the cure was recorded as saying, We are very appreciative of the contribution goals set by Holland America Line. Through leveraging the support of staff and guests alike, the company has reached the million dollar mark in less than two years. This is quite unique and an accomplishment achieved by only a few companies in our Million Dollar Council.

It is estimated by Holland America that there have been over 80,000 guests participate in the On Deck for the Cure fundraiser. There have been over 1,000 walks since the program started in 2006. All the participants needed to pledge was $15 or more, and then simply go for a walk around the deck for a grand total of five kilometers. That is usually about 12 laps to reach the distance. Each participant receives a T-shirt and a pink wristband. There is also a lemonade party after the walk.
