Continental Airlines to Accommodate Tech Savvy Passengers

Continental Airlines, unlike a lot of other Airlines are now following the lead of their technological savvy passengers. Continental is adding the ability for travelers to be able to enjoy various electronics, the ability to utilize laptops, and so much more. Of the airlines working to appeal to those who must be able to use their electronic items while in flight, Continental airlines has jumped upon this bandwagon by doing such tasks as installing lie-flat seats in business class so that passengers can enjoy music and personal videos.

At the same time, passengers can charge their iPods and have a power source for their laptops while in flight. This is made possible by the installation of USB, headset, and laptop power plugs above the passengers shoulder.

Unfortunately, Continental has yet to adopt Wi-Fi service while in flight, despite the expressed desires of customers to have the ability to access the internet while in flight. All airlines are exercising the idea of adding wireless internet service to their planes because this could be the remedy that airlines need in order to increase their revenue and meet the needs of their passengers. Being that airports are the number one source for wireless internet access, this is a technology that Continental Airlines and other airlines throughout the country are investigating and even testing. They have just been slow at adopting such a system due to the economic woes that have plagued airline companies.

As it stands, airlines, including Continental, are in the process of lightening their planes in order to save on fuel costs. Continental Airlines does, however, have plans to offer messaging services and TV programs in the near future. In the meantime, American Airlines is experimenting with in-flight Wi-Fi service and JetBlue Airways actually introduced the service on one of their planes in December 2007. Other discount airlines are studying the cost of such an in-flight service because of the fact that consumers are willing to pay for such a service if it means having access to the internet while in flight.

Continental Airlines expects to be rolling out messenger programs on its newest Boeing 737 in January 2009. This is a service that will be provided by LiveTV, which will also offer email access and TV programming to passengers. Continental customers will be able to take advantage of the email and instant messaging service for free. The TV programming will come with an additional $6 fee for access. However, the TV programming will be free for first-class passengers.

If successful, Continental Airlines will entertain the possibility of adding such services onto other flights and will look into adding additional services such as Wi-Fi to their flights.
